" The Barrister and the Letter of Marque combines the intrigue of John Grisham, the vibrant world of Charles Dickens, and a mystery worthy of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. But as he delves deeper into the mystery, he learns that the forces arrayed against Lady Jameson, and now himself, are even more perilous than he'd imagined. Moved by the lady's distress, intrigued by the Letter, and goaded by an opposing solicitor, Snopes takes the case. And the Letter-the sole proof his actions were legal-has mysteriously vanished. Yet when the Padget returns to London, her crew is met by soldiers ready to take possession of their goods and arrest the captain for piracy. The ship was granted a rare privilege by the king's regent: a Letter of Marque authorizing the captain to seize the cargo of French traders operating illegally in the Indian Sea. In a last-ditch effort to save her faltering estate, Lady Jameson invested in a merchant brig, the Padget. That changes the day a struggling heiress, Lady Madeleine Jameson, arrives at his door. Winner of 2022 Daphne du Maurier Award in Overall Published Division and Mainstream Suspense/Mystery As a barrister in 1818 London, William Snopes has witnessed firsthand the danger of only the wealthy having their voices heard, and he's a strong advocate who defends the poorer classes against the powerful.

I am very excited to see where Rin’s story goes from here in The Burning God. Kuangis obviously making a statement on war and it hits home every time. It’s fascinating to watch as the chess pieces are moved around the board, and to see how the decisions of the people on top of the hierarchy affects those at the bottom. We go to war again, but Rin is now on the offensive. The plot of this book is fantastic! It’s one of the main reasons I liked this book more than The Poppy War. She’s never better than when she’s talking with her friends (no names because of possible spoilers). That being said, Rin’s friendships are wonderful. The decisions Rin makes often make me want to shout at the book as it’s obvious that she’s letting her emotions get the better of her – that she’s either being lied to or can’t see the obvious threat because she’s so angry. I hope this is purposeful, because it’s brilliant! I don’t think I have ever read a book where I don’t know how to feel about the main protagonist. From this examination of the text against the background of rhetorical theory, one of the perennially vexing questions in the interpretation of Machiavelli's political thought-how to reconcile the apparently "princely" counsels of the Prince with the republican sentiments expressed in Machiavelli's other writings-can finally be resolved. Classical rhetorical theory will thus be seen to be a powerful tool in the proper understanding of the text, a line of approach continuing the already important work of the past twenty years, which seeks to restore an appreciation of the fundamentally rhetorical nature of Machiavelli's literary technique and political thought. Machiavelli keeps the old word but gives it a new, more reasonable meaning: an ethical meaning that renders vendicare synonymous with giustizia. While not a new reading of the text (the notion of the Prince as a crypto-republican work goes back even before the Enlightenment to the very first years of its appearance), this article places such an interpretation on the firm base of rhetorical theory together with a close reading of the text. In this essay, we use classical rhetorical theory to show that Machiavelli's Prince was not intended as advice for a prince, nor as "political science," but rather as a very subtle, but nevertheless powerful, critique of the Italian princes of his day, the Medici included. |
